Getting Around Indianapolis
There are not many options for public traveling accommodations in downtown Indianapolis. The most accessible and least expensive way to explore downtown Indianapolis is by using the established bus routes. Though the buses are excellent for navigating downtown destinations, they are less ideal for traveling outside of the downtown area.
IndyGo Bus Services
IndyGo is the public transportation offered by the city of Indianapolis for anyone who wants to get around downtown without driving their own car. It is always a good idea to let someone else do the driving when you are visiting a new city, especially one as large as Indianapolis. Bus routes are posted clearly at each bus stop, so it can be easy to decide which bus to take to get to the destinations you are most interested in. The fares for IndyGo are very reasonable and won't make too large a dent in your traveling budget. Riding the bus allows you to see the sites as you travel through the city without worrying about when you are supposed to turn or where you are going to park. Bus services are more reliable and easier to use within the downtown area than in more remote parts of the city.
Door to Door Service for Disabled Travelers
If you suffer from a disability that makes it difficult for you to manage the established bus routes, IndyGo has a service called Door to Door that will send a shuttle to your location and deliver you to regular bus stops throughout the city. You need to call ahead to schedule pick up times and drop off times, so it is important to plan your trip carefully if you need to utilize the Door to Door service. Door to Door charges the same fare as a standard bus.
Shuttles and Taxis
If you need more flexibility for your travel schedule, you may want to take advantage of the excellent taxi system in downtown Indianapolis. It is easy to find a taxi at most times of the day or night in the downtown area. Taxis are more expensive than bus fares, but they give you the freedom to choose your destination on your own timetable. If you arrive in Indianapolis through the airport, you will find that most of the downtown hotels offer a free shuttle service from the airport to their hotel location. Shuttles will also deliver you to the airport again at the end of your stay.
